The Problem

SMA error 3902: Generator voltage too low

SMA inverter error code 3902 usually means the PV array voltage is too low for the inverter to start operating normally. This happens when the inverter is waiting for sufficient DC input voltage from the solar panels before beginning feed-in operation.

In many cases, this is not an inverter fault. It can happen naturally during low light conditions such as early morning, late afternoon, cloudy weather or heavy shading across the solar panels.

Low PV voltage can also occur if panels are dirty, partially shaded or affected by debris that reduces solar generation.

The Solution

Let e-Solar check your inverter and solar input

If the code appears occasionally during low sunlight conditions and clears once the sun becomes stronger, this is often considered normal inverter behaviour.

If SMA error code 3902 continues during full sunlight hours or your solar production appears lower than expected, it is worth having the system checked. Our Perth solar experts can inspect the inverter, assess solar panel performance and help determine whether the issue is linked to low solar input, shading, dirty panels, DC wiring or another system fault.

Contact e-Solar and let us know:

  • The exact error code on the screen or app
  • When the code appears
  • Whether your solar production has dropped
  • Your inverter model, if you know it

Do not open the inverter or attempt electrical testing yourself. If the issue is persistent, a qualified technician may need to test DC voltage levels, inspect the solar array and confirm the system is operating correctly.
