SMA Inverter Event 6401
SMA error 6401: Insulation resistance sensor measurement error
SMA event 6401 usually means the inverter has detected a problem with the insulation resistance measurement system. When this happens, the inverter may disconnect from the grid or stop producing power to protect the system.
This is usually related to the inverter’s safety monitoring system rather than a normal operating condition.
Insulation-related faults can sometimes be linked to moisture ingress, damaged DC cabling, connector faults, panel issues, string faults or an internal inverter sensor problem. In some cases, the issue may also relate to interference affecting insulation monitoring.
Contact e-Solar for a safe system check
If the code appears once and clears by itself, the inverter may simply have reacted to a temporary condition. The inverter will usually continue monitoring the system and may reconnect automatically if conditions return to normal.
If SMA event 6401 keeps returning, it is worth having the system checked. Our Perth-based solar team can inspect the inverter, review the insulation resistance readings and help determine whether the issue is linked to the inverter, DC wiring, solar panels, connectors or wider system conditions.
Contact e-Solar and let us know:
- The exact error code on the screen or app
- When the code appears
- Whether your solar production has dropped
- Your inverter model, if you know it
Do not open the inverter or attempt to inspect rooftop panels or DC wiring yourself. If the issue is persistent, a qualified technician may need to test insulation resistance, inspect the solar strings and assess whether the inverter or another system component has been affected.
