Solar Energy System
Alcoa's RDA 9 project is a civil/earthworks project to construct a 60 hectare residue storage facility and is being constructed by the Alcoa-Leighton Alliance.
As part of the project Alcoa needs to power an e-Sampler (Dust Monitoring System) that will take dust level measurements on daily basis to monitor Alcoa's efforts in reducing dust levels by 25% at their Pinjarra site.
The e-Sampler takes an air sample every minute and analyzes the dust content. An air pump turns on and sucks in a sample, during which time the dust sample is dried by a heater and then the sample is pumped back out. This takes 5 seconds of operation every minute.
If a high reading occurs, a blue strobe light alarm activates for 10 minutes and an in built mobile phone sends an SMS ALARM to coordinator's mobile phone.
The e-Sampler in addition to other peripherals operating at peak, draw 2 amps at 12 Volts. This is a total consumption of 4 AH/D
Problem: Alcoa required a reliable system to monitor dust levels remotely and intervene when required
Solution: The dust monitoring system is powered entirely and managedĀ remotely by a solar system comprising of:
System Composition
24 hour dust level monitoring
SMS & Blue Strobe Light alarms on high readings
The system will alert the supervisor only when action is required
