Residential Solar Energy Rebates (WA only)

The Federal Government’s Solar Homes and Communities Plan cash rebate for eligible home owners ends June 30th. If you want to purchase a residential solar energy system you can claim $ 8,000 for a 1000 Watts (1KW) system.

Eligible applicants have to meet the following: (ended 30th June 2009)

• Combined household taxable income must be less than $100,000
• The applicant must be the home owner and the property on its individual name
• The rebate applies only for house where the applicant resides
• No more than one applications are allowed

Solar Credits (from 1st July 2009)

From July 1st 2009 the Solar Homes and Communities Plan shall be replaced by a new system already widely used in Europe based on Renewable Energy Certificates (Solar Credits).
With the new system there will be no means test on the solar credits, small businesses can be included in the scheme and from June 2012 the credits will reduce annually until 2016. Also instead of the $8000 rebate with the new plan a 1000 (KW) solar system will attract only $5000 but $7500 for a 1500 Watts (1.5KW) respectively

RECs (Renewable Energy Certificates)

RECs come as a result of home owners installing solar energy systems and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The REC’s have a market value and are traded like company shares in the stock market. REC’s can be purchased from you from company needing to reduce their carbon foot print under the new Federal Government Mandatory Renewable Energy Act.

Feed in Tariffs

To further promote the adoption of solar and other renewable energy systems the WA government has plans to pay a premium rate for any KW of electricity produced by the renewable means. This has been the driving force behind the booming solar markets in Europe, US and Japan over the last few years. In simple terms you sell to the grid (Synergy) your solar or wind energy produced electricity at a much higher price than what you buy from them which currently is mainly coal or gas produced.
